Miala Swim Diaper instructions
4 sized pattern for a 2 layer swim diaper/diaper cover
for use as a diaper cover with prefolds or trim inserts
Supplies Needed
18  inch square or more of pul (polyurethane laminate)
18 inch square or more of a cute print or solid, cotton or blend for the outer
FOE (fold over elastic) 1” plush version recommended
polyester thread
snaps (12 socket pairs and 4 stud pairs) or hook and loop tape
sewing machine with zig zag stitch (preferred)
Instructions
1.  Note which side is *top* before beginning
2.  Cut out desired size pattern, marking notches
3.  Trace and cut one of each fabric
4.  Place wrong sides together and stitch 1/4” from edge all around
5.  With outer fabric facing up, position foe flush with one of the corners marked
“A”.   Lay foe open with plush side down and place the edge of the fabric on the
center line.  Fold the elastic in half, encasing your fabrics.  Foe should have the
fold on your right and the opening on your left as you sew.
6.  Start sewing (zig zag) at the marking for the middle snap pair - this will leave a
tail of about 1 1/2” that you will finish off at the end.  Now, note which side is “top”.
For L and XL, your first side will be the “top”.  This needs to be sewn at 75%
stretch.  Stretch as you sew and always stop with the needle in the down position.
If you are sewing the S or M, this first side is sewn normally with 100% stretch and
the other end “top” needs to be sewn with 75% stretch.  Sew the first edge, then
relax foe about 1 1/2” from the edge.  Sew with no stretch to the corner, pivot, sew
end, pivot, then sew another 1 1/2” with no stretch.  Then, stretch elastic 100%
again as you sew the leg edges.
7.  Repeat process from step 6 for all edges, being sure to use 75% stretch for
your “top” edge.  When you reach your last corner, stop 1 1/2” from the edge and
remove from machine.
8.  Cut foe flush with fabric edge.  Then miter the edges (cut a 45% angle with the
tall corner at the outside) creating your corner
9.   Open up the foe and place your 2 tails right sides together and sew your
corners together with 1/4” seam allowance
10.  Trim and turn, positioning on your cover.
11.  Zig zag with foe relaxed all around your final corner.
12.  Set 12 socket snaps on wings with sockets (not caps) on the right (outside)
side
13.  Set 4 stud snaps with caps (not studs) on outside of other end

Velcro variation: You may want to sew your top edge with less stretch (25%) to
make your velcro lay flatter.   Sew a piece of loop velcro, aplix or touchtape across
“top” edge below foe and all the way across.  Then sew squares of hook onto the
inside of the opposing  wings.  I would recommend 1.5 “ width or 2”.  Hook
squares should be sewn over the foe, butting up to or hanging over the edge of
the cover.

Laminated pul variation:  If you are using allready laminated print for your outer,
use a soft knit or microfleece as the liner

Turn and topstitch variation (no foe):  Add 1/4” seam allowance to the pattern and
sew right sides together all around leaving a 4” hole at the center front.   Sew 1/4”
elastic into seam allowances at legs and back  Turn right side out and close top
seam.  Finish the same as above.  This method is not recommended for the swim
diapers, but it will work as a cover.
